SunLine Transit Agency is looking to fill a full-time Transit Planning Assistant


Under general supervision, performs difficult and responsible paraprofessional duties in support of the Agency’s transit planning program; administers the bus stop program; researches and responds to customer complaints and requests regarding service issues; and performs related duties as assigned.


Transit Planning Assistant is the paraprofessional class in the transit planning class series. Incumbents perform a variety of difficult and responsible duties in support of the Agency’s transit planning programs, including administering the bus stop program and investigating and responding to customer complaints regarding transit services and amenities. Incumbents are expected to carry out specialized job assignments without close supervision requiring a detailed understanding of transit planning procedures and practices learned through experience.

Transit Planning Assistant is distinguished from Assistant/Associate Transit Planner in that incumbents in the latter class perform difficult to moderately complex transit planning duties requiring the application of professional theory and principles of transportation planning.


Performs a variety of difficult and responsible job assignments in support of the Transit Planning department’s programs and activities; reviews proposed service changes and prepares comments on expected ridership levels.

Uses graphics software to create maps, bus stop and on-board signage. Takes photographs of current & proposed locations for amenities.

Administers the bus stop program, maintain and update database.

Reviews and recommends action on encroachment permits.

Receives quests for temporary route and bus top realignments for special events/construction.


1.     Ensures maintenance and updating of on-board signs, brochures, rider alerts and other materials; orders and updates SunLine telephone system on-hold messages.

2.     Maintain up-to-date contact lists and information on events sponsored by other agencies, for planning purposes.

3.     Performs a variety of special projects as assigned.

4.     Provides backup support for other department staff.


      Knowledge of:

1.     Practices, procedures and terminology of transportation planning, as applied by the Agency.

2.     Methods and procedures used in the development and analysis of planning information.

3.     Basic federal, state and local law and regulations governing the provision of public transit services, particularly as they apply to routes and stops.

4.     The Agency’s service system, including routes, schedules, stops, transfer locations, amenities and associated standards and requirements.

5.     Basic methods, practices and tools used in project and program management.

6.     Uses and operations of computers and standard business and software applications.

7.     Principles and practices of sound business communication; correct English usage.

8.     Office management and record keeping practices and procedures.

Ability to:

1.     Perform technical research and analysis at varying levels of difficulty on paraprofessional planning issues or problems.

2.     Understand, interpret, explain and apply Agency standards, policies and procedures and federal and state law and regulations to a variety of planning assignments.

3.     Use computers and business and graphic software to develop route and bus stop maps which are accurate, complete and easy to read by internal staff and customers.

4.     Prepare clear, concise and complete technical documents, records, reports, correspondence and other written materials.

5.     Communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.

6.     Understand and follow written and oral instructions.

7.     Exercise sound judgment and reach appropriate conclusions and recommendations within established policies and procedures.

8.     Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and/or confidential customer and stakeholder issues.

9.     Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Agency management, staff, representatives of other public agencies, customers, the public and others encountered in the course of work.

Education, Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school of G.E.D. equivalent; and five years of experience that provides familiarity with urban or transportation planning programs and activities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Completion of training and/or college-level course work applicable to urban or transportation planning is highly desirable.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Agency’s vehicle insurance policy.
